Brooklyn Museum of Art
The Brooklyn Museum has one of the best collections of Egyptian Art in the world. Museum permanent collection also includes Classical & Ancient Middle Eastern Art, Arts of Africa, the Pacific & the Americas. Museum has installed 28 period rooms & feature an extensive selection of American Paintings. The Brooklyn Museum of Art is one of the world's premier museums with a permanent collection that includes more than one & a half million pieces. In terms of square footage, the Brooklyn Museum's the 2nd largest in the USA. Only the Metropolitan is bigger. Enhanced in 2004 with $63 million in renovations, The Brooklyn Museum's housed in a 560,000-square-foot Beaux-Arts building, designed by the famous architectural firm of McKim, Mead, & White. It originally opened in 1897. Its spectacular permanent collection includes awe-inspiring ancient Egyptian artifacts, African & Pacific arts & a unique collection of art from Iran's Qajar dynasty. The Brooklyn Museum of Art's also known for its contemporary art often featuring emerging local artists. The Department of Contemporary Art was created in 1985, & focuses on Western art from 1945 to the present. Some of the artists represented include: Willem de Kooning, Richard Diebenkorn, Joseph Kosuth, Cindy Sherman. The Museum found itself embroiled in controversy in 1999 with one contemporary exhibit, "Sensation: Young British Artists from the Saatchi Collection," the outcry centered around Chris Ofili's painting The Holy Virgin Mary, which portrays an African Madonna accessorized with elephant dung. Then-Mayor Rudolph Guiliani withheld the Brooklyn Museum's funding because he found the painting offense. Giuliani then tried to evict the Museum. That action resulted in a lawsuit by the Museum citing First Amendment. The Museum won in federal court. The 1st Saturday of each month, the Museum offers film, music, dance, hands-on art exhibits... for free. Each month there's a different theme & participants can learn the tango, listen to Caribbean music, paint like a Renaissance artist... This event's extremely popular, attracting visitors from all boroughs. It's one of Brooklyn's best events. The Brooklyn Museum Cafe's a fun way to end your tour of the Museum. The menu themes change to reflect the theme of the Museum's main show. Gorgeous & peaceful, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden shares ground with the Brooklyn Museum & is a perfect place to reflect and muse.
Free on weekends, the Brooklyn trolley shuttles passengers to the Museum, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Prospect Park & the Prospect Park Zoo.
