HarperCollins was founded in New York City in 1817 by the brothers James and John Harper.
In 1987, Harper & Row was acquired by News Corporation. Headquartered in New York, now the company is a subsidiary of News Corporation.
The worldwide book group was formed following News Corporation's 1990 acquisition of the British publisher William Collins & Sons. Founded in 1819, William Collins & Sons published a range of Bibles, atlases, dictionaries, and reissued classics, expanding over the years to include legendary authors such as H. G. Wells, Agatha Christie, J. R. R. Tolkien, and C. S. Lewis. HarperCollins has publishing groups in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia/New Zealand, and India.

In 2007, HarperCollins had several international mega hits including The Dangerous Book for Boys by Conn Iggulden and Hal Iggulden, Next by Michael Crichton, and The Children of Húrin by J. R. R. Tolkien (published by HarperCollins globally outside the United States).
Building itself into a truly global publishing company rather than simply a company with publishing operations around the world, HarperCollins took great steps towards achieving this goal over the past year through significant initiatives in China and India. In China, Cidian.cn, an online Collins English-Chinese dictionary, was launched; Swordbird, by Nancy Yi Fan, was simultaneously published in English in the English-speaking world and Chinese in China; and several Chinese classic works have been selected to be translated and published in the United States and the rest of the English-speaking world. In India, HarperCollins announced a Hindi publication of The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis and confirmed the expansion of our current publishing and distribution efforts. HarperCollins Children's Books:
For the sixth consecutive year, HarperCollins Children's Books has had the greatest number of bestsellers. A Series of Unfortunate Events, #13: The End by Lemony Snicket was the best-selling children's book of the year with more than 1.8 million copies sold in the U.S. alone. Greenwillow Books author Jack Prelutsky was named the first Children's Poet Laureate in the United States. And the Children's Book division also won two Quill Books Awards for A Series of Unfortunate Events, # 12: The Penultimate Peril by Lemony Snicket for the Children's Chapter/Middle Grade category and If You Give a Pig a Party by Laura Numeroff and illustrated by Felicia Bond in the Children's Illustrated category.

In the U.K., HarperCollins had a record breaking 81 Sunday Times bestsellers this year with 14 titles that reached #1, including The Dangerous Book for Boys, The Children of Húrin by J. R. R. Tolkien, Coleen McLoughlin's Welcome to My World, More Than a Game by John Major, The Pocket Dangerous Book for Boys: Things to Do by Conn Iggulden and Hal Iggulden, Damaged by Cathy Glass, Wolf of the Plain by Conn Iggulden, Tony Maguire's Don't Tell Mummy, Please Daddy, No by Stuart Howarth, A Place Called Here by Cecelia Ahern, Torey Hayden's Twilight Children, The Devil Wears Prada by Lauren Weisberger, Journey's End by Josephine Cox and Sam Bourne's The Righteous Man. The Devil Wears Prada, which sold more one million copies this fiscal year, and The Righteous Men, which was the biggest contemporary thriller of the year, were two of the top five bestselling paperback fiction books in the U.K. HarperCollins U.K. took home 16 top literary prizes, including the prestigious Orange Broadband prize for fiction for Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche's Half a Yellow Sun.
HarperCollins Australia/New Zealand:
HarperCollins Australia placed 185 books on the bestseller list. Cookbook author, Donna Hay, was named as a "Magnificent Seven," one of the best cookbook authors in the world, by the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards. HarperCollins New Zealand had a record four finalists in the New Zealand Post Children's Book Awards, including the winner, Thor's Tale, in the Junior Fiction category.
HarperCollins Canada: In Canada, HarperCollins won the Canadian Marketing Association Gold Award and Merit Award as well as the Book Promoters Association of Canada Award for Promotional Excellence for the #1 bestselling The Weather Makers: How We Are Changing the Climate and What it Means for Life on Earth by Tim Flannery. Marketing Magazine's Marque Awards named HarperCollins Canada a "Marketer That Mattered," marking the first time a book publisher was so honored.
Zondervan:
For the fourth consecutive year, Zondervan was named Supplier of the Year by the Christian Booksellers Association. Inspired By…The Bible Experience, Zondervan's fastest-selling new Bible, was awarded Audiobook of the Year by the Audio Publishers Association as well as a Silver Anvil Award by the Public Relations Society of America for its PR campaign.
