News From Milan Fashion Week: Spring 2009

Prada: Miuccia Prada cited her inspiration as a man poised between power & fragility, hanging in the balance between extremes. Her enigmatic comment cast an illuminating light on the collection we’d just seen. The 1st outfits out were a parka & blouson hanging off the models shoulders on straps. Helmut Lang offered the same idea, but where his version suggested fierce refugee pragmatism, Miuccia's made a nice portrait neckline for her new batch of boychiks. At the same time, there was a hint of tension -suspension - in the idea. It was extended in subtle details like the elastic bands that wrapped shoes or encircled waists.
You could parse Prada collections till hell froze over, so loaded with suggestion are they. The button "buried" in a double-breasted jacket? Margiela explored the idea of the phantom garment. But it doesn't make it any less seductive. The elongated polo layered over cotton smock layered over boxer shorts? It evoked emergency-room or sanitarium whites. What better way to convey the subtext of men in crisis? Step back from obsessive fandom & there were irresistible basics, like a Gap - fine knits, perfectly tailored pants, cotton shirts, denims. A gold latex coat & all this: As the mannequin moved, it trembled, poised between power & fragility .

Burberry Prorsum: For Christopher Bailey latest collection, he imagined the late artist/filmmaker Derek Jarman in his garden at Dungeness, a hardscrabble stretch of English seaside perched next to a nuclear reactor. There was a floppy Panama hat like Jarman’s, prints that looked like raindrops or mud splotches, & a dour color palette that ran a gamut of moss, peat, stone, bark, & pewter.
There was an air of melancholy. Bailey understands that there is sensuality in sadness. The droop of his scoop-neck tops managed to bare the clavicle as a new erogenous zone. Christopher insisted that the collection was actually all about outerwear: trenches, coats, jackets which is why he wanted to let the air in to the skin below. That must have been why, there were also shirts in a washed-out broderie anglaise & wool gauze tees . Christopher Bailey called his collection “Crumpled Classics,” which accounted for the vintage flavor of many of the clothes. It’s pieces that have already acquired a life through being worn & loved. But it is sad, much like the richness of nature surviving in the sobering shadow of the Bomb...

From The Atlantic To The Pacific...

The place to be was inside the air-conditioned confines of New York's Museum of Modern Art, at the dinner honoring philanthropist Donald Marron & director Mike Nichols, guests Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Tina Brown, & Diane von Furstenberg.
Less well ventilated were the after-party attendees They endured stifling temperatures & a brief downpour in the sculpture garden outside. Once the rain stopped & the squeegees were put to good use, they did get to see M.I.A. perform. Claire Bernard, who stayed after dinner to catch the Sri Lankan hip-hop artist's set, said that she had no trouble identifying with the characters in Nichols' movies like The Graduate. Sae said that she might already be Mrs. Robinson. And her godson hooks her up with his friends. He's four.

Alexander Wang had left Manhattan's heat behind for the balmier climes of Los Angeles, where Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon & E. Wasson hosted a trunk show in his honor at the boutique Satine. "It's like a mini-vacation," the designer acknowledged. The injury was sustained while running in the woods with Justin Timberlake during the making of a video for his line Wiliam Rast. Has Timberlake called to check in on her progress? She said: "Hell NO!" But he's busy. Actress Erika Christensen summed up Alexander Wang's appeal: "He is so punk rock..."

Those weren't words you were likely to hear at the Louvre in Paris. There couture-loving Becca Cason Thrash hosted a gala for the U.S. friends of the Louvre. Cason Thrash said that six months is all they had to put this together. You consider the 200-strong guest list - Princess Caroline of Monaco & Hanover, Bianca Jagger, Stefano Pilati; the prizes in the evening's auction - private vacations at the Forbes chateau, the Salzburg manse belonging to gallerist Thaddaeus Ropac, & a private villa in Kuala Lumpur; or the entertainment - Duran Duran, performing "Hungry Like the Wolf" & "A View to a Kill". Not to mention the logistics of pulling this off in the space beneath the the museum's famous glass pyramid. The evening raised a Texas-sized $2.5 million...

Candidate's Wife

Home - NeoPopRealism JournalCindy McCain, who is married to Republican John McCain, is known for an elegant sense of style, lending glamour to her husband' campaign.
McCain posed in size zero jeans for the latest issue of Vogue.
McCain, 54, the Arizona senator's second wife, is reserved & seems far less comfortable in the limelight when she campaigns with her husband, who is 18 years her senior.
RODEO QUEEN
The blond, blue-eyed McCain is a former rodeo queen & cheerleader who holds a master's degree in special education from the University of Southern California. She grew up in a wealthy family in Phoenix & is heiress to Hensley & Co, one of the largest U.S. distributors for brewing giant Anheuser-Busch.
Last month, she released a tax return showing she made about $6 million in 2006.
She has raised 4 children. A daughter Bridget, 16, she adopted from Mother Teresa's orphanage in Bangladesh. McCain has traveled the globe as part of her charitable work.
McCain's deferential manner puts her in the company of more traditional first ladies such as Nancy Reagan & Laura Bush.
Calvin Jillson, a political scientist at Southern Methodist University in Dallas said that she is more in the classic mold of the candidate's wife on the campaign trail.
He said McCain has her own version of the "Nancy Reagan stare," the adoring gaze that the former first lady perfected.
Cindy McCain told a campaign rally, "I am proud of my country. I don't know about you, if you heard those words earlier -- I am very proud of my country."
But she has drawn criticism. When she refused to release her tax returns critics said her lack of transparency was at odds with her husband's message of openness in government. McCain eventually relented. She has also talked openly about her addiction in the early 1990s to painkillers, originally prescribed for back pain, which she at first kept secret from her family. McCain has also made a full recovery from a stroke that nearly killed her four years ago. She serve a crucial role of giving emotional support to her spouse amid the grueling slog of the campaign...

Home - NeoPopRealism JournalEttore Sottsass, guru of counter-current design, died on 31 December 2007. Born 90 years earlier in Austria, Sottsass lived in Turin after 1929 & obtained a diploma from the Ecole Polytechnique in 1939. Following in the footsteps of his father, he chose to study architecture. He opened his own architects’ practice in Milan at the relatively young age of thirty & then left for the U.S. in 1956 where he began conceiving prefabricated houses working with George Nelson. At the end of the 1950s, he also began to make an impression with his design work & started signing numerous contracts with firms like Poltronova, Alessi & Olivetti. In 1959 he received the prestigious Compasso d’Oro prize for his computer entitled “Elea 9003”.
What were the keys to his success? Energetic designs, tinged with humour, often irreverent to prevailing standards & exuding both spirituality and humanism. An enemy of standardised design, he proposed sensual & expressive objects as an antidote to an era dominated by modernist rationalism. His predilection for the experimental combined with the influence of Hinduism led him down a path of “cross fertilisation” very much in keeping with oriental culture: he practiced a wide variety of artistic disciplines, mixing cultural references (Indian, Chinese, Western, noble and popular cultures), combining different styles & fusing materials in a poetical & unexpected way. Since the beginning of 2008, numerous articles & exhibitions have paid tribute to Ettore Sottsass around the world, & auction sales of his work have also accelerated. On 22 April 2008, the action house Pierre Bergé et associés dedicated an entire session to him with a sale at their Brussels branch entitled “Focus on Ettore Sottsass”. The prices covered a very wide spectrum, with ceramics at several hundred euros and rarer pieces going for between 20 and 50 thousand euros. There were also pieces of furniture on sale for 2 to 3 thousand euros such as the "ivorY" pedestal table & the "treetops" floor lamp.
Numerous small ceramic vases, boxes & cups created by Édition Bitossi, as well as two polished pewter vases produced by Serafino Zani went under the hammer for between 250 & 1,000 euros. His limited edition works fetch higher prices. Small ceramic objects produced in small series of roughly 30 pieces attracted prices nearer to 5,000 euros such as the small "Merlo" boxes of which 33 pieces exist (plus 4 artist's proofs) that sold for 4,200 euros, or the "Civetta" vase, a larger piece from the same series, that sold for 6,000 euros (Pierre Bergé et associés). In order to ritualise domestic life, Sottsass invested his creations with symbolic value. His series of monumental ceramic totems're veritable achievements on a technical level. Two of these sculptural compositions, made of superimposed pieces, were offered at the Pierre Bergé auction with price estimates of between 20 & 30 thousand euros each. Neither sold in that bracket. A month later, an entire collection of five monumental totems entitled "Flavia" sold for 100,000 euros at Tajan in Paris.
At the Brussels sale, Sottsass enthusiasts showed a distinct preference for his more functional creations such as the "mobilo giallo" model cabinet which sold for 16,000 euros and the "Francoforte" model table (limited edition of 16) which sold for 30,000 euros. The highest price at the sale was generated by a monumental "furniture-bar " (240cm) in Jacaranda which was produced in a limited series of only eight pieces. Estimated at between 40 and 50 thousand euros, it attracted generous bidding and finally sold for 60,000 euros!

Breakthrough: Building Human Rights Culture

ICED - I Can End Deportation ( a play on the Immigration & Custom Enforcement Department), is a free, 3D down-loadable video game, available at www.icedgame.com. Close to 90,000 people have played the game, & the number keeps growing.
ICED was created by Breakthrough in partnership with national & community organizations, high school teachers & more than a hundred students from high schools& after-school programs across New York City.
ICED is about current immigration laws on detention & deportation. These laws violate human rights & deny due process to all immigrants: legal permanent residents, asylum seekers, students & undocumented people. Unfair immigration laws: deny a fair day in court & deport people without a hearing; tie judges' hands & prevent them from considering the circumstances of each individual case; impose unjust punishment; hold immigrants in detention indefinitely.
When w let government deny due process & human rights for some people, we put all of our freedoms at risk.
As a player, you step inside the shoes of one of 5 immigrant youth in Anycity, USA & try & become a citizen. The day-to-day routine seems normal enough, catching the subway, applying for a job, but for an immigrant, the day-to-day is anything but normal.
As one of the immigrant characters, you have to make moral decisions & answer myth & fact questions about immigration. If you answer incorrectly, you face immigration officers & increase your chance of being placed in detention of being deported.
If you are placed in detention, you are separated from your family & endure harsh conditions, while awaiting - often for unknown amount of time - the random outcome of your case.
You can use ICED in your classroom or organization. For high school teachers, the Curriculum provides in-class lessons, homework assignments & uses web 2.0 teaching tools. It is a aligned with New York State & New York City Social Studies & English Language Arts Standards.
For community groups & organizations, the Discussion Guide gives activities, idea for action & tips for mobilization.
You even can hold ICED house parties & talk about the issues... ICED offers to visit the following websites so you could learn more about the game & continue to work towards improving the immigration laws: www.icedgam.com, www.myspace.com/letsbreakthrough, www.youtube.com/letsbreakthrough, http://facebook.com/Breakthrough/11084036253.

Sketches On Glass

nypubliclibraryThe New York Public Library, Humanity & Social Sciences Library, located at Fifth Avenue & 42nd Street, New York City, present Sketches On Glass in Stokes Gallery & Monumental: the Photographs of Edouard Baldus in Print Gallery.
These exhibitions have been made possible by the generosity of Miriam & Ira D. Wallach.
Pioneer by Corot in the 1850s, cliche-verre prints are created from hand-made glass negatives. The glass is coated with an opaque substance, & lines are drawn on the prepared ground. The plate is placed on photographic paper & exposed to light, & in the developed print the drawing appears as black lies against the white of the paper. Tone is controlled through the opacity of the coating-- thinner areas allow more light to penetrate, creating a range of tones.
Glass plates were used as negatives in two separate photographic precesses during the 19th century: the wet-plate & dry-plate collodion processes. Glass plates had two advantages over paper negatives: they yielded a high level of detail, & they withstood numerous printings. But glass plates were also fragile & often difficult to work with. Glass was used for negatives from the 1850s through the 1920s, when it was replaced by film. Invented by William Henry Fox Talbot in 1840, the paper negative is the earliest type of photographic negative. It was generally mad from fine cotton rag paper that was sensitized with silver salts exposed in a camera, then developed & fixed. Paper negatives often impart a slight texture to the images, depending on the nature of the paper, which was sometimes waxed or treated to add transparency. aper negatives were popular in Britain & Europe during the 1840s & 1850s. In this, the earliest positive print, the image is created through contact with a paper or, rarely, glass negative. Used mainly in Europe through the 1850s, the process involved sensitizing a sheet of paper in a solution of sodium chloride & then coating the paper with silver nitrate. The paper was then placed, sensitized side up, in contact with the negative, printed in sunlight, then fixed...
The albumen print was the most common photographic printing process of the 19th century & was popular through the 1890s.

Throughout his career, Cornel has had the privilege to work in a number of exciting industries. He started out in L.A. as an art director in the music industry, where his responsibilities included designing album covers. He made his way into computer graphics (CG) at a time when the animation & CG industry was still in its infancy, followed by a few years later with a shift into game development.
"A pivotal point for the gaming industry was the shift from 2D to 3D. This was when things started to take off.For me, game development became a business opportunity around 2002-2003, when the necessary software started to become available for licensing. That was a major step that allowed smaller players to start creating high-quality games."
Prior to moving to Singapore, Cornel was running CNT Media, an animation company based in Hamburg, Germany. The original plan was to set up a studio in Singapore to which production work could be outsourced from CNT Media in Germany, but after assessing the relative advantages of operating in Singapore, Cornel made the decision to run the whole business. There were several reasons behind the decisions. Cornel relates: "There are a number of factors that make Singapore a more attractive place to operate that Hamburg, such as Singapore's English language environment & its warm climate. Singapore is also more metropolitan, & there's less bureaucracy involved for things like obtaining employment passes for our foreign staff, in making our decision, we also spoke to a number of small companies here to gain their insights into what it is like to operate here.Their feedback helped encourage us to locate in Singapore."
Cornel's team at Emerging Entertainment is now hard at work developing Troll & Armor, an exciting fantasy adventure game. While a lot of his time spent dealing with partners, investors & other managerial responsibilities, he also gets involved in the creative work, such us providing input & making decisions on character development & design issues. "This is a major production, & it is constantly evolving," explains Cornel. "We are putting everything into making this the best game possible."

"Warhol recognized that both fame and money represent power, but of the two he was more interested in fame. Anyone can make money, but not everyone can be famous. For fame to endure, you must create a new idea, performance, photograph, or painting that captures the lasting qualities of both imagination and taste..." Ron Galella wrote in this book.
Ron Galella made his name capturing celebrities in unguarded, private moments. Famously banned from approaching Jackie Onassis & punched by Marlon Brando, Ron Galella was a favorite of Andy Warhol. A. Warhol shared Galella's fascination with the great & near great.
"I never knew that he liked me so much more than other photographers," Galella writes.
This book is the unique visual diary of Warhol's life & times, his haunts & entourage.
"Andy identified with Ron's outsider position. Ron Galella was unwanted - the guy who was always being shooed away and threatened. I think Andy grew up feeling like that. He was an outsider in art school and early on in new York. Even when he became the ultimate insider, he still carries that outsider around with him," Glenn O'Brien wrote in the Foreword. O'Brien worked & played with Andy Warhol as editor & art director of Interview in the late 60s. O'Brien is now "The Style Guy" at GQ & regular contributor to Vanity Fair...

Home - NeoPopRealism JournalHOW TO TALK ABOUT BOOKS YOU HAVEN'T READ
by Pierre Bayard first published by Bloomsbury in 2007.
The New York Times named this book “a survivor’s guide to life in the chattering classes.”
If people are expected to have read all works of literature, & thousands published every year, what're we supposed to do in those funny situations in which we’re forced to talk about books we haven’t read?
This book is witty, a huge hit in France that has drawn huge attention from worldwide critics. A literature professor and psychoanalyst Bayard argues that it’s more important to know a book’s role in a ccollective library than its details. Using examples from Graham Greene, Oscar Wilde, Montaigne, and the movie Groundhog Day, Bayard describes the varieties of “non-reading” & the sticky situations that might confront us. He offers his advice on what to do. His advices are ppractical, funny, thought-provoking.
How to Talk About Books You Haven’t Read is in the end a love letter to books, offering a whole new perspective on how we read and absorb them
He starts his book with Oscar Wilde quotation: "I never read a book I must review; It prejudice you so."
