Sigmund M. Abeles was born in Brooklyn, New York City in 1934 and grew up in Myrtle Beach, SC. In 1955, he earned a B.A. Degree from the University of South Carolina, and studied at the Art Students League of New York in NYC, and the Skowhegan School in Maine. In 1957, he received a Masters in Fine Arts from Columbia University.

In 1961-64, Sigmund Abeles was an instructor at the Swain School of Design in New Bedford, Massachusetts and in 1964-69 at Wellesley College. He has been a member of the National Academy since 1990. Since 1994, he lives and works at his studio in New York City.

Sigmund Abeles focuses in an empathetic investigation and intense of the human figure and how it relates to our world. He believes an artist needs to be able to draw well in order to communicate what he senses, sees, and dreams about, to create convincing visual expression.

Mainly figurative, his work has been critically acclaimed. His awards include National Institute of Fine Arts & Letters Award, National Council of Arts & Humanities Sabbatical Grant, Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Grant for Graphics, and now, he is the 3rd place winner of the 3rd NeoPopRealism Starz Int’l Art Competition. His works are in more than 100 private and public collections worldwide, including the leading institutions such as the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and top art museums of the U.S.

Sigmund Abeles at 75: Celebrating Life and Art, features highlights from the artist’s long and illustrious career, giving viewers a broad and compelling perspective of his work as

a painter, printmaker, pastel artist and draftsman. There will be a festive 75th birthday

reception with the artist on Friday, November 6th

from 6pm – 9pm, and the public is

cordially invited to attend this special event. The artist will also give a talk on November 8th at 3pm, and on November 14th at 3pm.

Curated by Sandy Rupp and Michael DeCerbo, the exhibition features approximately forty works,

including paintings, pastels, etchings and sculpture that highlight Abeles’ passionate and enduring

engagement with the human figure, and with human concerns. Regardless of the medium he uses, it is the artist’s profound empathy and eloquence of line that adds layers of intrigue and complexity to his soul stirring portrayals, and reveals a deeper identity in his subjects and selfportraits.

Three very individual and different yachts were launched this year by Lurssen: the 1st yacht is the 60 m Arkley, which premiered at this year Monaco yacht Show. Jacob El Hanani was born in 1947, in Casablanca. In 1969, he graduated from the

Avni School of Fine Arts, Tel Aviv, Israel.

His art style developed as a reaction to the life he experienced when he moved to New York many years ago. He is interested in micro aspect of drawing. It was natural for Jacob to use ink and paper. Why? Because the abundance of time and lack of money. He could not even buy art supplies.

It was a personal challenge for Jacob El Hanani to bring drawing to the extreme and see how far his eyes and fingers could go. He tries to compete with a computer to make his drawings as perfect as a machine would, and he thinks, he fail for only one reason - because of the human imperfection. By using the square, he is trying to give attention to the execution which was neglected by minimalism that gave more importance to the idea.

When people look at his drawing, he would prefer to hear "How?" rather than "Wow!"

At Renssalaer Polytechnic Institute

From Thursday October 1 to Saturday November 28, the Mezzanine of the Curtis R. Priem Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC) at Renssalaer Polytechnic Institute will be home to Take a Day for Yourself!, a new installation by the Brooklyn-based Danish artist Mads Lynnerup. The genre-crossing Lynnerup has long been interested in the everyday: His last installation was devoted to routines. But with Take A Day for Yourself!, he charts what happens when people depart from those routines—or even disrupt them. Specifically, he's enlisted random members of the Troy and Rensselaer communities to take an unscheduled day off work or school or whatever else they're supposed to be doing. Everything else is up to them.
The rich and inventive uses Lynnerup's subjects make of their ensuing 12 hours of stolen time are shown on short videos and oversized posters that together make up a whimsical visual guide to taking a day off in Troy—or anywhere else, while gently tweaking some of our society's fundamental assumptions about usefulness, leisure, and productivity.
Mads Lynnerup's work incorporates video, printmaking, sculpture and performance in an ongoing investigation of phenomena that most of us take for granted. His subjects have included the anti-terrorist posters on the New York subways (If You See Anything Interesting, Please Let Someone Know Immediately) and the daily routines of residents of a Copenhagen neighborhood (Routines). He has shown his work at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, The Mori Art Museum in Tokyo, P.S. 1 in New York, and Warsaw's Zacheta National Gallery of Art, and is represented in the collections of the Blanton Museum of Art, the Miami Art Museum, the Orange County Museum of Art, and the San Jose Museum of Modern Art.
. Lynnerup will attend a second reception held as part of Troy Night Out on Friday October 30 from 5-7 PM. All events are free and open to the public.

NeoPopRealism Starz Int'l Art Competitions and NeoPopRealism Journal & Wonderpedia: Introducing 1st Place Winner Vanessa Bahmani (New York, USA), Rokafella & KenFury, Photography

Vanessa Bahmani was born in the early 80’s in Guatemala City. Soon after, her family moved to Berkeley, California were she and her sister were raised surrounded by arts. She grew up attending cultural events, theater, music performances. Her family started a Guatemala folkloric dance group named “Ixim Tinamit” (Ee-sheem-tea-na-meet), meaning people of corn in Quiche, which incorporated modern interpretation of traditional dance. Quiche is one of the many Guatemalan indigenous languages. Through this creative outlet, which she was a part of, Vanessa began to appreciate art.
Later, she received a B.A. degree in Ethnic Studies & African-American Studies from UC Berkeley. After graduating from UC Berkeley, she moved to New York City and in 2009 earned an MFA degree in Photography from School of Visual Arts.
Vanessa exhibited her photographs in “The Hustle” art show at Power House Books Arena in Brooklyn in 2008. The same year, she was nominated a semi-finalist for the Adobe Achievement Awards in Photography. Next year, 2009, she exhibited her work at the ISE cultural foundation in SoHo, New York, and received the prestigious nomination for the 2009 NY Photo festival student book category.
To the question “What is art and what is your art inspiration?” she said: “Art is a creative outlet of expression. Art, and particularly photography is my voice of self-expression to the world. I am inspired to make art by subject matter that moves me both emotionally, and politically. I draw upon personal experiences and interests to begin a project, and continue to build on them.
In this particular case I took break dance as the focus of my study for its ingenuity and high degree of difficulty, but above all for its ability to speak to youth worldwide. Break dance serves as a vehicle with which a new cultural identity can be created. Since its inception, Hip-Hop has been a culture of re-inventing, appropriating and transforming itself, with each generation bringing a willingness to cross boundaries between tradition and innovation. In this same spirit I set out to developed my own visual style through photographic exploration of the break-dancers’ body gestures and movements.”
Vanessa said that she feels pretty fortunate to be able to be an artist and make a living doing what she loves. The things, she loves most about her life are her family, her husband, making photographs, and living in New York City.
“My future goals are to be recognized as an international artist/photographer and to show my work in museums and galleries around the world,” Vanessa said. “I want to publish my photography book, and become a prominent commercial photographer in the entertainment industry.” In future, she would also like to open a great restaurant in New York City.
Looking in her future, she said: “Ten years from now, I see myself working as a prominent photographer in the entertainment industry in NYC. I’ll be living with my family and own my restaurant in Manhattan…”
“Vanessa Bahmani captured the moment with her photo camera and gave to this moment a long and fascinating life,” Juror Nadia Russ said.

Parsons in New York

Parsons School of Art, Media and Technology will launch its Intermedia Initiative with a symposium on October 3, 2009, entitled Human Rights and Human Wrongs: Performance and Politics in Guatemala. The symposium brings together visual artists, cultural theorists and investigative journalists to explore how contemporary art engages with the struggle over official public memory of civil strife in Central America.
This symposium will feature Regina Galindo, Anibal Lopez and David Perez, three contemporary artists from the Guatemalan capital whose works explore the residual effects of state violence on public memory everyday life. Combing body art, street actions, video and photography, they draw attention to recent histories of political unrest, genocide and urban lawlessless. In addition to presenting their work at the symposium, the artists will be performing and lecturing at various New York venues between September 29th and October 3rd.
Regina Galindo, recipient of a Golden Lion award at the 2005 Venice Biennale, creates powerful visual metaphors by subjecting her body to various forms of aggression. Her first solo exhibition in New York will open on October 2nd at Exit Art, where she will also perform. She will also lecture at NYU's Hemispheric Institute on September 29th.
David Perez 's collective performances comment on global power relations through the careful positioning of participating bodies. Supported by a commission from the Franklin Furnace Fund for Performance Art, he will create a new piece involving ten performers entitled Túmulos that will premiere at Exit Art on October 3rd.
Anibal Lopez, otherwise known as A-1 53167, creates street interventions that combine the rationalist detachment of Conceptual art with the political bravado of Latin American guerrilla fighters. He will stage a new work in the Wall Street area of Manhattan on October 1st.
The artists will be joined by art historian Johanna Burton (Whitney Independent Study Program), Performance Studies scholar Jill Lane (NYU), cultural theorist Silvia Vega-Llona (The New School) and National Security Archive Senior Analyst Kate Doyle, who will be discuss the artists work and the social context in which they are immersed.
Guatemala endured more than three decades of brutal armed conflicts from the 1960s through the 1990s in which more than 200,000 people were killed. Although a peace agreement was finally reached in 1996, the past thirteen years have been marked by the rule of impunity, social inequality and violent crime. Assaults, death threats and killings continue. None of the political officials who presided over massacres have been brought to trial. Although political activist efforts continue to by thwarted by forces of repression, in recent years, many artists in the capital city have devised creative means of addressing the political turmoil that continues to shape the lives of all Guatemalans.
Human Rights and Human Wrongs: Performance and Politics in Guatemala is organized by Professor Coco Fusco for the Intermedia Initiative at Parsons School of Art, Media and Technology.

The RISD Museum of Art presents Inner City, an epic narrative of urban growth, decay, change, and life itself, realized in clay by one of the most significant contemporary artists working in ceramics today—Arnie Zimmerman (American, b. 1954). Comprised of more than 150 figurative and architectural glazed stoneware elements, the installation is adapted to the Museum's Chace Center galleries by architect Tiago Montepegado and Zimmerman.
Sprawled across a 4,000-square-foot space, the exhibition will feature a ramp with a viewing platform, where visitors can survey the panorama and appreciate the city's narratives from a variety of perspectives. The city itself is organized in a grid pattern across the floor, and punctuated by pedestals of different heights and elements attached to the walls. Smaller versions of Inner City were presented in 2007 at the Museu da Electricidade for the Lisbon Architecture Triennial, and in 2008 at the Keramiekmuseum Princessehof (Leeuwarden, the Netherlands). The RISD installation significantly expands on these shows, featuring a new body of work which includes a large bridge. This presentation marks the first in North America.
Installed within a structural framework designed by Montepegado (in response to José Rafael Moneo's architecture for RISD), Inner City's diminutive tenements, skyscrapers, scaffolding, and construction workers evoke a whimsical, mythical world. A closer look reveals signs of something amiss, as workers brawl or tumble down I-beam shafts and dumpsters overflow. Indeed, Zimmerman's vision is an ominous one, a cautionary tale about urban corporatization, gentrification, and the waning connection to history in general and in the everyday. Zimmerman has lived and worked in New York for more than twenty-five years, observing its streetscape with a mix of awe and regret. "The parts of the city I was most familiar with when I first arrived had a visceral, palpable connection to the past," Zimmerman observes. "Over the past few decades, New York City has irrevocably changed into a different urban environment—something more civil and benign, more bland and corporate," he adde d.
Arnie Zimmerman (American, b. 1954; lives and works in New York) received a BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute in 1977 and an MFA in 1979 from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. In his early career, Zimmerman became known for architecture-scale carved vessels that by the late 1980s began to resemble totemic columns. Zimmerman's work changed dramatically in the early and mid 1990s, when he began to consider the human figure on a smaller, more intimate scale. By the late 1990s, he focused on groupings or tableaus of figures.

Kapka Kassabova was born in Bulgaria in 1973. At the age of 16 her family emigrated to England and new Zealand. Now she lives in Scotland. Kapka is the author of 4 poetry collections, 2 travel guides, and 2 novels.

News From Bolchazy-Carducci

This October, Bolchazy-Carducci Publishers officially launched its first application on Apple's iTunes App Store. An app is a small computer program for use with Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch. Bolchazy-Carducci's inaugural app, Latin Proverbs, contains 1,188 proverbs, aphorisms, mottoes, and more in Latin and in English from ancient authors, the Bible, and modern thinkers as well. A random proverb greets the user every time the app is launched on an iPhone or second generation iPod Touch. Users can then swipe the screen to read more.

Users of "Latin Proverbs" can set their language preferences, too. Proverbs can display in Latin with macra (long marks), English, Latin/English, or English/Latin. Users can also browse the database of proverbs by subject, by author, or by work. Over 90 authors and 125 texts appear in the app along with hundreds of keywords. Classical, Medieval, and Vulgate Latin are all used, following the scope of Latin from Classical giants like Cicero to the masterpiece of St. Jerome's Vulgate Bible. Later proverbs include those quotables both written and said by Christopher Marlowe, Francis Bacon, Theodore Roosevelt, and more.

The app is based on Latin Proverbs: Wit and Wisdom of the Ancients, originally published by Bolchazy-Carducci in 2003. Andrew Reinhard, Bolchazy's Director of eLearning and co-developer of Latin Proverbs, explained that for the first app, "I wanted to develop something for a general audience. Everyone can benefit from reading some of the greatest thoughts from some of the greatest thinkers in history. The fact that these are in Latin and in translation can also appeal to those teachers and students of the language as well as to people with a love of Classics and Classical civilization."

Future app development is likely, and Reinhard is looking at perhaps making an app version of Artes Latinae, Latin flashcards and quizzes in support of Bolchazy-Carducci's textbooks, and a Latin game with contemporary graphics, sound, and gameplay.

Hong Kong Stirs From Slumber

Sotheby’s kicks off its Modern and Contemporary Asian Art sales in Hong Kong on 6 October 2009. The day will be divided into three sessions: 20th Century Chinese Art, Modern and Contemporary Southeast Asian Paintings and Contemporary Asian Art. The catalogues are ambitious with more than 380 works by Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Indonesian and Korean artists, and a total revenue estimate of close to $25m.
Eagerly awaited, these sales will inevitably give some indication of the kind of results that can be expected at the November sales, particularly the Contemporary Art sales in New York and the Asian Art sales in Honk Kong (Christie’s, 29 and 30 November). Remember that the first consequences of the global financial crisis on the art market became apparent in Hong Kong in October 2008 before spreading to the rest of the world. Pratt Institute, New York: Design Jazz & Pratt Falls

NYSID Will Launch Three New Degree Programs

Over the next year, NYSID will launch three new degree programs, the first new programs to be created at the college since 1996. "To be a leader in interior design education requires that we look beyond how and what we teach as part of our design curricula toward something more expansive and inclusive of the gamut of design disciplines," said NYSID President Christopher J. Cyphers. "The college has evolved to the point where we can add new programs that are a logical extension of our mission."

NYSID will also be offering a one-year Master of Professional Studies in Sustainable Interior Environments launched this fall. This unique program—designed for students possessing a baccalaureate degree in an unrelated field—provides the professional-level education necessary to become licensed interior design practitioners. Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum

Amidst the cultural and political ferment of the 1960s, avant-garde artists and architects began embracing biological and scientific models as well as the potentials of emerging technologies to explore radical new directions in urban design, developing projects that were at once fanciful, complex and conceptually serious.
This fall the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum at Washington University in St. Louis will present Metabolic City, an exhibition surveying work by the British collective Archigram; the Japanese Metabolists (whose members include Fumihiko Maki, architect of the Kemper Art Museum); and the Dutch painter Constant Nieuwenhuys, an early member of the Situationist International.
Curated and designed by Heather Woofter, assistant professor of architecture in the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts, Metabolic City will feature approximately 70 drawings, plans, models and conceptual projects, including rarely seen materials drawn from private archives and a sampling of work by influential predecessors.
Organized thematically, the exhibition explores theoretical and conceptual overlaps between these groups, all of which came to view the city as a kind of living organism, in which civil infrastructure forms the basis for social interaction and individual liberty. At the same time, though they articulated their views in explicitly political terms, each pioneered distinctive — and remarkably prescient — means of architectural representation, often employing techniques and processes that are only now entering mainstream practice.

Major Loan Exhibition to Explore Use of Chance, Randomness And Probability in Modern Art

Dripping or flinging paint; flipping coins to compose musical scores; letting the progressive decay of organic materials determine a composition — since the early 20th century avant-garde artists have used these processes and many others to explore the creative possibilities of chance and its attendant release of authorial intent. This fall the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum at Washington University in St. Louis will present Chance Aesthetics, a major loan exhibition investigating the use of chance as a key compositional principle in modern art.

Organized by Meredith Malone, assistant curator for the Kemper Art Museum, Chance Aesthetics will feature more than 60 artworks by more than 40 avant-garde artists from Europe and the United States, including Jean Arp, George Brecht, John Cage, Marcel Duchamp, Max Ernst, Ellsworth Kelly, Alison Knowles, François Morellet, Robert Morris, Robert Motherwell, Jackson Pollock, Dieter Roth, Niki de Saint Phalle and Yves Tanguy, among many others.At the exhibition's heart is a central paradox involving the tension between chance and choice. While many artists have championed the creative possibilities of the arbitrary and the accidental — both as an attack on reason and logic and as a counterpoint to officially sanctioned aesthetic tastes — artistic subjectivity is never entirely ceded. The controlled and the arbitrary variously interplayed throughout the 20th century, stimulating new forms of creative invention that challenged longstanding assumptions about what might constitute a work of art and the role of the artist as autonomous creator.

A fully illustrated color catalog — distributed by the University of Chicago Press — accompanies the exhibition. Essays by Susan Laxton, Meredith Malone and Janine Mileaf draw connections across media and disciplines while linking the genesis and meaning of artistic production through chance to larger socio-cultural, historical and theoretical contexts. Urban Knowledge.Since 2004 the Utrecht Graduate School of Visual Art and Design (MaHKU)* has been the sole master program in the Netherlands to offer one-year, interdisciplinary graduation courses in research. Through an intensive seminar program with artists, designers, architects, curators, and theorists, two main research themes are addressed. Departing from the question of intermediality, the department of MA Fine Art focuses on the position of the artistic image in a culture of visual information, whereas the department of MA Design focuses on topical forms of engagement from a transdisciplinary attitude. These research trajectories are developed and realized in close collaboration (Utrecht Consortium) with global and local partners.
number of auction sales and the volume of lots proposed has remained stable compared with 2008. Moreover, for the first quarter of 2009, the French capital posted a better overall revenue figure than either London or New York on the back of the Pierre Bergé-Yves Saint-Laurent sale at the Grand Palais in February. In fact, at the end of a first quarter in which the crisis was felt particularly hard in New York, art prices in France posted a contraction of only 5% and they have remained at that level since then. There are two main reasons for this resistance: firstly Paris (and France in general) is essentially a less high-end market and therefore less speculative by nature and secondly, the Paris branch of Christie’s has had a number of particularly fruitful sales. One figure which particularly bears out this Parisian exception is a bought-in rate that has diminished from close to 50% in the autumn of 2008 to below 40%. On 28 May 2009, Sotheby's Contemporary Art sale in Paris found buyers for 95.2% of the lots on offer. However, the best Parisian results over recent months have been generated by Sotheby’s rival Christie’s which had substantial success with its sales of private collections (part or whole) in February and then in May. The sale of the Bergé-YSL collection on 23 February 2009 was a veritable windfall. Remember that its revenue total of €373.5m (of which €255m for works of art) was equivalent to 53.2% of France’s total auction revenue in 2008! An oasis in an otherwise barren landscape for global art sales, that auction produced 22 sales above the $1m line (vs. 19 in 2008 for the whole of France) including four of the five best sales in France over the last 20 years! (Henri MATISSE, Les coucous, tapis bleu et rose: €32m, Constantin BRANCUSI, Madame L.R.: €26m, Piet MONDRIAAN, Composition avec bleu, rouge, jaune et noir: €19.2m, and Composition avec grille 2: €12.8m). At the end of May, Paris had another strong moment although relatively modest by comparison with the February results. Sotheby’s posted only two sales above the $1m line (Nicolas STAëL de, Bouteilles, €1.1m on 27 May and Georges Pierre SEURAT’s drawing Femme avec deux fillettes, €1.3m on 28 May) while the best result from Christie’s Impressionist & Modern sale was €460,000 (for Auguste RODIN’s Faunesse debout). The best result from the Contemporary Art sales was €620,000 for Andy WARHOL’s portrait of Yves Saint-Laurent on 27 May. Nevertheless, Christie’s pulled off a highly successful event by offering approximately 50 works by François-Xavier and his partner Claude Lalanne that generated €2.3m, lifting the final total for the sale to €6.7m. The French auctioneers have also produced some remarkably good results, including the large sum generated from the sale of Rodin’s Penseur that was presented at Drouot by the houses Mathias, Baron Ribeyre & Associates and Farrando-Lemoine. This emblematic sculpture adorns the centre of the tympanum of Rodin’s Portes de l’Enfer. Estimated at €400,000, the piece sold for no less than €2.56m on 17 June, beating the previous record of $2.7m (€1.86m) for the same subject (Sotheby’s NY, 7 November 2007). Immediately after this historic bid, a Petite Eve by the same artist completely dwarfed its price estimate of €300,000 when it fetched €2m. As the summer approaches, the French art market is entering a calmer phase. Among the upcoming summer auctions, Christie’s has yet another sale scheduled involving a private collection. The sale entitled L'oeil d'un sculpteur: Collection Mary Callery will take place on 2 July and will offer 63 modern works with signatures including Henri Laurens, Hans Arp, Henri Michaux and Fernand Léger. The star lots will include a small Concetto Spaziale, Attese , Attese by Lucio FONTANA Wou-ki ZAO, dated 1959, including one large format that is estimated at between 400 and 600 thousand euros. In the same price range, the auctioneer will be offering a painting in acrylic by Frank Stella measuring 4-metres across. For budgets of one to three thousand euros, there will be two etchings by Pierre Soulages and various paintings by Jesse Reicheck (oil on canvas 1960, €1,500 - €2 000) and James Brown (Un être, €2,000 - €3,000).

Ukraine: President Viktor Uschenko Celebrated 350 Anniversary of the Konotop's Battle

Festival Cossack Rodoslav took place in Shapovalovka's Cossack Slavi Square on July 11. Guests were entertained by folk groups and the Obrazsovo-pokazatelni Orchestra of Ukraine's Militants with conductor General-Mayer Bladimir Derkach. Among other renown guests of the festival there were singers Taras Petrienko, Tatiana Gorobets, Nina Matvienko of the group "Gold Keys".

The center of Shapovalovka was used to imitate and build look-like kureni of XVII-XVIII centuries. Each of them was made in different region's Cossack traditions...

Ukrainian President Viktor Uschenko with his brother Peter have visited the Kuren of Nedrigalov region. They were treated well and according to its local traditions: with kulich, kapustniak, pig's fat (Ukrainian best-loving food), and home-made sausages. Owners of the Kuren said that brothers Uschenko were drinking only sparkling water...

July 11, in Konotop, Saint Patriarch Filaret was baptizing new church that was built specially for this celebration. The same day, President of Ukraine Viktor Uschenko opened in Shapovalovka the Monument which was built to celebrate the victory in this historical battle.

The Ministry of Culture and Tourism invested about 500,000 Grivens for this celebration. For restoration of the roads in the Konotop’s region, government spent 9 Mil. Grivens.

The historical battle near Konotop between Cossack Army (headed by Hetman Ivan Vigovski) and Moscow Army (head - Knight Alexei Trubetski) was 27-30 of June, 1659 on the shores of Kukolka river, near Sosnovka, Shapovalovka, Popovka, Saranovka. These villages are now belong to Konotop's region. Tatars and the hired German and Polish military were helping to Ukrainians in achieving this important success, and made Russian czar Alexei Michailovich to stop his military activities against Cossacks - Hetmans - and start thinking about the protection of his land. It was the turning point.

It was 350 years ago. Now, in 2009, we create more positive and friendly, non-violent environment.

As one said the great thing that works: "Happiness is the good health and bad memory..." History is important and it helps to live better life now, but let’s look optimistic in our future, and live without wars, hate and bad feelings. Yes, bad things happen, but it was then, now everything is different, better, and, by the way, we live in the new millennium! So, let’s live sensibly, in peace and happiness.

Randolf Cliff

Supported by Edinburgh College of Art and the National Galleries of Scotland, and curated by Clémentine Deliss and Charles Asprey, Randolf Cliff has successfully completed its second year.
Guest artists in residence for 2008-2009 were Marc Camille Chaimowicz, Joseph Kosuth, Laura Letinsky, Sanna Marander, Dan Peterman, David Schutter, Dexter Sinister, and Frances Stark. Perched over an abrupt rock face in Edinburgh's eighteenth century New Town, Randolph Cliff looks out over the Dean Bridge to the Water of Leith, and forty miles further to the estuary of the Firth of Forth.
Over the centuries, the house, with its impressive Georgian façade, has inspired Edinburgh's leading optometrists and specialists of anaesthesia and claustrophobia. During their time at Randolph Cliff, guest artists are encouraged to engage in the preclusive or formative phase that leads to the generation of new work. The College of Art and the Gallery of Modern Art seek to assist this period of fluid enquiry between artists, scholars, and students in Edinburgh.
In addition, Randolph Cliff is building up a special research collection based on initial propositions and blueprints donated by visiting artists. In the Winter Semester 2009, Edinburgh College of Art shall hold a series of seminars to debate the conceptual, physical, and legal shape that future research or study collections might take. These seminars, developed in conjunction with the University of Edinburgh's School of Arts, Culture & Environment and the Talbot Rice Gallery, will include forthcoming artists in residence at Randolph Cliff, in particular Thomas Struth, Zvi Goldstein, Joseph Grigely, and Antje Majewski. An international conference on "Future Collections" supported by the Royal Society of Edinburgh will take place in Spring 2010.

Field Work is the first publication of A/S/N Mutual Press, a new imprint based on a micro-savings association established by nine graduates of Art/Space/Nature, the interdisciplinary Masters of Fine Art course directed by artist Alan Johnston at Edinburgh College of Art. Art/Space/Nature at Edinburgh College of Art is unique in that it offers postgraduate students from fine art, architecture, landscape architecture, and design the opportunity to study and engage with a wide range of sites from arctic Greenland to coastal Slovenia and urban Chicago, as well as several locations in Scotland including the islands of Orkney.

When a child, Milan Kuzica was completely obsessed with just a pencil drawing.
Milan touched the clay for the first time relatively late, probably when he was eight. He said: “From as far as I can remember, I was always interested in visual arts. And it was not based on my decision, it was given to me. To name the sources of my inspiration I would have to travel through centuries or even millenniums. Today I‘m in a mood for Calder, but month ago I would have chosen some unknown Aztek or Egyptians… But I live under the star of Greece antiquity and its late periods…”

Milan Kuzica was born November 12, 1962. In 1981, he graduated from High School of Fine Arts and Design in Kremnica (Slovakia). In 1991 - from Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava (Slovakia). In 1992, he graduated from Komenius University in Bratislava.
In 1996 - 1997 Milan was teacher at TAFE University in Perth, Australia.
He was working as a sculptor, industrial designer, graphic designer, and participated internationally in exhibitions and symposiums - in Australia and Belgium, Czech Republic and Holland, Slovak Republic and USA.
Milan is a Member of the Slovak Union of Artists. Now he lives in Prague.

Pete Herzfeld is an Assistant Professor of Department of Visual Arts, Frostburg State University.

His inkjet “paintings” attempt to illustrate the socio-politico tension generated by death: “When we die, we leave in our wake a trail of artifacts and places that we have shaped, constructed and designed."

Pete is interested in the power of places and artifacts to tell the stories of people who may have passed through. “I use real people in order to stress the reality of our human condition,” he said. “The narrative of the images is intuitive, a piling up of layers with visually chaotic meaning. The artifice is immediately apparent, while the underlying meaning fluctuates according to the viewer’s perceptions and pre-conceived notions of what “death notice” and “weather report” means to them. Realization of meaning is anchored in some partial truth, but the images’ aim is to convey something important despite the dailyness of the individual images.”

His thoughts: “... the inherent artifice within these images is intentional and measured to elicit response, to seduce and engage the viewer.

This response is calculated to be ambiguous and conflicted, but it is also meant to do justice to its final message. Certain words and phrases have entered the collective consciousness through the repetitiveness of the media.

A less specific and larger interaction of contrasting scales and meanings now enter into other conflicting dimensions: ideologies, religions, cultures, and traditions.”

R. Gopakumar was born in Kerala, India, December 15 of 1972. “When a child, life was always beautiful and fresh like the morning dew,” he said about his childhood. “I was blessed as the 5th child to my father Ramakrishna Pillai and mother Janamma. We depended on traditional agriculture for our living and our family occupation as farmers always kept me close with nature...”
R. Gopakumar studied art in India and U.K: 5 years - National Diploma in Fine Arts (painting) from Govt. Ravi Varma College of Fine Arts (Kerala, India) and Diploma in History of Art from London Art College, Milnthorpe, U.K. (in progress).
“I think artists are born and not made,” he says. “How much ability they have, and what they are able to do with it varies depending on personality and probably the early circumstances of their lives. Some with very little ability are able to forge huge, successful careers, while others with tremendous ability cannot move ahead at all.”
R. Gopakumar has always been an artist, he said. “During my tender days while at play, I nearly drowned in a nearby pond. My eldest sister rescued me from the still waters on seeing my beloved toy afloat, which had caught her attention initially, then to my little hand trying to reach the surface. As a child, terrified at the truth in the incident I was determined to try always to convey that truth. This nostalgic incident inspired me to paint “reincarnation” later in my journey as an artist...”
“My father used to tell that any form of art does not inspire to a good family living,” R. Gopakumar said, and continue: “his statement towards this were derived from artists during his time of life which lived in poverty and low income. Due to this he always advised and encouraged me to get any kind of professional job oriented education...”
Independent thinking and experimental mind of R. Gopakumar are amazing. “During my school days I used to sketch images, illustrations of Gandhi, Tagore, Ashoka, Shajahan from my text book to the outer covers,” he said. “This happened to be at the notice of my class teacher, but he did not punish me for this act, and else he encouraged me to do more as he said: identify your talents within yourself. This led me to take part in various painting competitions. The scenic beauty of Kerala, folk art, various religious festivals, fairy tales, Hindu traditional rituals, had been the cherished moments in my childhood.”
During 1990-1995, in Ravi Varma College of Fine Arts he learned Indian, Eastern, Western, African, Egyptian, Islamic and various forms of arts and art history. Kerala Lalitha Kala Academy granted R. Gopakumar with a scholarship for his education. During his college days he had a passion for comedy and theater act.
His regular practice in yoga for traditional physical and mental disciplines and peace of mind has inspired R. Gopakumar in most of his works. The passion for art led to the interest in music and he studied south Indian classical music (vocal) and Mruthangam (rhythm instrument) for few years.
His art portfolio includes exhibitions in 1991, 92, 93, 94, 95 in Ravi Varma College of Fine Arts, Mavelikara, Kerala; 1992 - Bishop Moore College, Mavelikara, Kerala; 1996 - Kerala Lalithakala Akademi; 1996 - Kadappakada Sports Club, Kollam; 2000 - Bahrain Museum, Manama, Bahrain, and more.

In an event that hits the computer world only once every few years, security experts are racing against time to mitigate the impact of a bit of malware which is set to wreak havoc on a hard-coded date. As is often the case, that date is April 1.

Malware creators love to target April Fool's Day with their wares, and the latest worm, called Conficker C, could be one of the most damaging attacks we've seen in years.

Conficker first bubbled up in late 2008 and began making headlines in January as known infections topped 9 million computers. Now in its third variant, Conficker C, the worm has grown incredibly complicated, powerful, and virulent... though no one is quite sure exactly what it will do when D-Day arrives.

Thanks in part to a quarter-million-dollar bounty on the head of the writer of the worm, offered by Microsoft, security researchers are aggressively digging into the worm's code as they attempt to engineer a cure or find the writer before the deadline. What's known so far is that on April 1, all infected computers will come under the control of a master machine located somewhere across the web, at which point anything's possible. Will the zombie machines become denial of service attack pawns, steal personal information, wipe hard drives, or simply manifest more traditional malware pop-ups and extortion-like come-ons designed to sell you phony security software? No one knows.

Conficker is clever in the way it hides its tracks because it uses an enormous number of URLs to communicate with HQ. The first version of Conficker used just 250 addresses each day -- which security researchers and ICANN simply bought and/or disabled -- but Conficker C will up the ante to 50,000 addresses a day when it goes active, a number which simply can't be tracked and disabled by hand.

At this point, you should be extra vigilant about protecting your PC: Patch Windows completely through Windows Update and update your anti-malware software as well. Make sure your antivirus software is actually running too, as Conficker may have disabled it.

Microsoft also offers a free online safety scan here, which should be able to detect all Conficker versions.

Art Market Today

The buy opportunities offered by the crisis and the expected decrease in prices both mark the return of a market dominated not so much by supply but rather by demand. Although two thirds of respondents are still expecting further price contractions over the next three months, collectors have not deserted the market: 70% have expressed strong buy intentions.

However, the art market has not escaped the general crisis. According to the Art Price Global Index, prices dropped 34% in 2008 and the first market indicators in 2009 do not presage a rapid return to a more dynamic environment. Indeed, 33% of the voters are worried about the stalemate of the economic situation. After the first “test” sales in February in Paris, New York and London, market players have seen a clear loss of momentum on the auction market and a substantial loss of confidence (-4% from January to February). Standard & Poors’ negative CreditWatch on Sotheby’s BBB- rating and Christie’s disappointing 2008 results both symbolise the shift away from a seller’s market towards a market where the buyer is considerably closer to the centre of the acquisition process. Christie’s nevertheless had a major hit with its Paris YSL - Berge sale which exceeded all expectations and illustrated the strength of demand for very high quality works. That was a welcome respite for the auction house that was dragged into a Sino-French conflict. Conflict that could have been proved to be hazardous for its business with the Chinese market... From Moscow's Prison

From the Moscow's most notorious prisons, the man who was Russia's wealthiest person awaits a trial. And it will be a critical test of Russian justice and President Dmitry Medvedev's commitment to the rule of law. When oil billionaire Khodorkovsky was first jailed nearly six years ago, Russians saw the downfall of the former Communist activist as a victory over the oligarchs who plundered Russia's prized industrial assets after the Soviet collapse. But some people believe Khodorkovsky's real crime was to challenge Vladimir Putin and Kremlin. This is the new trial, under a new president. It stands to be a challenge for Medvedev's commitment to uprooting what he famously called Russia's "legal nihilism" and infusing greater credibility into a justice system. often criticized as a political cudgel.Lawyer of Vadim Kluvgant, Khodorkovsky's said that logic of this case is impossible to understand. Khodorkovsky's got in trouble first in 2003. He was arrested at gunpoint on a Siberian airport runway.Later, in 2 years, Vadim was sentenced to 8 years in prison for fraud connected to his Yukos oil empire, a company that was Russia's biggest producer and for tax evasion. Since then, until his last week transfer to Moscow's Matrosskaya Tishina along with business partner Platon Lebedev, he was mostly in a Siberian jail. It is about 4,000 miles from Moscow. The Prosecutor General's office announced the new charges, alleging that Khodorkovsky and his partners embezzled and laundered $25 billion from Yukos and related companies.

Some Russians have sympathy for Khodorkovsky and other oligarchs who got rich through shaky business deals in the messy 90s. He was estimated by Forbes magazine to be Russia's richest man with a $15 billion fortune. His lawyer said the allegations of a $25 billion theft border on impossible. His defenders insist Vadim was singled out for funding opposition groups and because he was believed to have political ambitions. He had his oil ambitions to build a pipeline outside of Kremlin control and independently pump Russian hydrocarbons abroad. The new prosecution is designed to keep him behind bars beyond the 2012 presidential election, after his current sentence is over. In August, court rejected his application for parole. Vadim Khodorkovsky has persisted in keeping the case in the public eye, his supporters were publicizing this case.

Last week, a man who claimed to be a cellmate of Vadim Khodorkovsky accused him of making sexual advances. A Moscow court rejected this claim. Vadim's supporters say the accusation is designed to smear Khodorkovsky. Some analysts in Moscow say that probably, those people who put him in prison don't ever want him to get out. They're afraid that time is slipping away... that the situation in the country is changing. The "changing situation" refers to the former law professor Medvedev, elected president a year ago, and his repeated speaches of reforming the justice system. A Moscow jury acquitted 3 men in the killing of celebrated journalist Anna Politkovskaya, and Medvedev appeared to chide prosecutors for not knowing how to argue their case before a jury. Medvedev has signed a law that prohibits jury trials in cases involving terrorism and treason. It is a measure that legal experts say could make it easier to jail opposition politicians. Director of Human Rights Watch's Moscow office saisd that he hasn't made good on his promises. Now, Khodorkovsky's 75-year-old father says that he hopes for a fair trial...

New Novel: Fragment by Warren Fahy

Russian Woman Attacks La Joconde in Louvre

Russian woman threw a teacup at the world's most famous painting, Leonardo da Vinci's "Mona Lisa." It emerged unscathed due to the bullet-proof glass cover.

The woman took a cap out of her bag and threw it over the heads of other people who were looking at the painting. The cup smashed on the bullet-proof glass. Probably, she wanted to draw attention to herself.

She put up no resistance when guards apprehended her.

She was handed over to police and has been transferred to the police psychiatric infirmary.

Most of the millions of visitors make a bee-line for the Mona Lisa, known in France as La Joconde.

The 500-year-old painting was stolen in 1911 from the Louvre but was returned two years later.

It was doused with acid by a vandal in 1956 and later the same year a Bolivian damaged it again by throwing a rock at it.

Hungry Eagle Caught His Victim on the Balcony of the Broadway's

Apartment and Did't Leave 'Till Eat It All

24 July, afternoon, the hungry eagle caught his victim - pigeon - on the balcony of the Broadway's apartment between Houston and Prince street in New York City and didn't leave 'till eat it all. Hundreds of pedestrians were taping and photographing the eagle, the Fire Department's alarming trucks came to see what happened. No traffic, no extra attention, nothing were too disturbing for the eagle. He was continuing his lunch for about one hour, and even didn't turn his head back till food was eaten. Then, the king of the sky - like nothing special there - slowly turned his body, and after while left... Watch the video:

ArtPrice: Paris Resist Crisis

The global art is in the midst of a crisis, Paris appears to be showing remarkable resistance: the number of auction sales and the volume of lots proposed has remained stable compared with 2008. Moreover, for the first quarter of 2009, the French capital posted a better overall revenue figure than either London or New York on the back of the Pierre Bergé-Yves Saint-Laurent sale at the Grand Palais in February. In fact, at the end of a first quarter in which the crisis was felt particularly hard in New York, art prices in France posted a contraction of only 5% and they have remained at that level since then. There are two main reasons for this resistance: firstly Paris (and France in general) is essentially a less high-end market and therefore less speculative by nature and secondly, the Paris branch of Christie’s has had a number of particularly fruitful sales. One figure which particularly bears out this Parisian exception is a bought-in rate that has diminished from close to 50% in the autumn of 2008 to below 40%. On 28 May 2009, Sotheby's Contemporary Art sale in Paris found buyers for 95.2% of the lots on offer. However, the best Parisian results over recent months have been generated by Sotheby’s rival Christie’s which had substantial success with its sales of private collections (part or whole) in February and then in May. The sale of the Bergé-YSL collection on 23 February 2009 was a veritable windfall. Remember that its revenue total of €373.5m (of which €255m for works of art) was equivalent to 53.2% of France’s total auction revenue in 2008! An oasis in an otherwise barren landscape for global art sales, that auction produced 22 sales above the $1m line (vs. 19 in 2008 for the whole of France) including four of the five best sales in France over the last 20 years! (Henri MATISSE, Les coucous, tapis bleu et rose: €32m, Constantin BRANCUSI, Madame L.R.: €26m, Piet MONDRIAAN, Composition avec bleu, rouge, jaune et noir: €19.2m, and Composition avec grille 2: €12.8m). At the end of May, Paris had another strong moment although relatively modest by comparison with the February results. Sotheby’s posted only two sales above the $1m line (Nicolas STAëL de, Bouteilles, €1.1m on 27 May and Georges Pierre SEURAT’s drawing Femme avec deux fillettes, €1.3m on 28 May) while the best result from Christie’s Impressionist & Modern sale was €460,000 (for Auguste RODIN’s Faunesse debout). The best result from the Contemporary Art sales was €620,000 for Andy WARHOL’s portrait of Yves Saint-Laurent on 27 May. Nevertheless, Christie’s pulled off a highly successful event by offering approximately 50 works by François-Xavier and his partner Claude Lalanne that generated €2.3m, lifting the final total for the sale to €6.7m. The French auctioneers have also produced some remarkably good results, including the large sum generated from the sale of Rodin’s Penseur that was presented at Drouot by the houses Mathias, Baron Ribeyre & Associates and Farrando-Lemoine. This emblematic sculpture adorns the centre of the tympanum of Rodin’s Portes de l’Enfer. Estimated at €400,000, the piece sold for no less than €2.56m on 17 June, beating the previous record of $2.7m (€1.86m) for the same subject (Sotheby’s NY, 7 November 2007). Immediately after this historic bid, a Petite Eve by the same artist completely dwarfed its price estimate of €300,000 when it fetched €2m. As the summer approaches, the French art market is entering a calmer phase. Among the upcoming summer auctions, Christie’s has yet another sale scheduled involving a private collection. The sale entitled L'oeil d'un sculpteur: Collection Mary Callery will take place on 2 July and will offer 63 modern works with signatures including Henri Laurens, Hans Arp, Henri Michaux and Fernand Léger. The star lots will include a small Concetto Spaziale, Attese , Attese by Lucio FONTANA Wou-ki ZAO, dated 1959, including one large format that is estimated at between 400 and 600 thousand euros. In the same price range, the auctioneer will be offering a painting in acrylic by Frank Stella measuring 4-metres across. For budgets of one to three thousand euros, there will be two etchings by Pierre Soulages and various paintings by Jesse Reicheck (oil on canvas 1960, €1,500 - €2 000) and James Brown (Un être, €2,000 - €3,000).

Didart: Art Becomes Experience

MAMbo Education Department is proud to announce the great success of Didart 2007-09 edition - an international research project on Art Education, led by MAMbo. This last edition has been concluded with the presentation of IDENTIKIT- A multimedia project on the Identity of Contemporary Art: a video, a website, a CD rom, a book, a questionnaire, an e-learning program and a collection of images to discuss about identity and contemporary artistic languages. The Kit (result of a common project that involved all the partners) is a multimedia educational packet, conceived to get young people closer to art, offering different points of view on the theme of the Identity of Contemporary Art, gathering and analysing experiences connected with different social and cultural contexts.

Particularly, MAMbo Education Department created an e-learning path aiming to introduce the Identity of the Contemporary artistic Creation through the idea of Experience as an Educational Approach to Art. Three young artists, coming from the MAMbo Contemporary Art Collection, suggest useful activities to understand their poetics and their feelings in the Modern Age. Purpose of the project is to involve a class or a group of students in a creative and personal re-elaboration of the given proposals.

Didart is a project conceived by MAMbo Education Department (Project's prime coordinator), financed by the European Commission – Programme Culture in the category Visual Arts, as the best proposal for Contemporary Art Communication and Education.

Didart's main purpose is to approach the public to Art and its places: protagonists of this project are Museums and Institutions which build up a dialogue with Art and Education.

The first edition (2002-2003) establish the network, realized the first Documentation Centre about Art Education in Reggio Emilia and created the website http://www.didart.net , that collects and spreads out all the activities linked to the project and its research fields.

In its second edition, Didart compared new Methodologies to individuate the best practices, to experiment a direct approach on Art and artists' Poetics. Final product of this experience was the educational exhibition Artists' Houses, that moved into all the partner Museums' seats.

The third edition of Didart started with the reflection developed by this European network about the figure of the Museum Educator, the importance of his role in the creation of a New Museum as a privileged place in which everybody can share and participate in the different knowledges. Didart International workshop began with a 12-days programme scheduled a series of theoretical meetings about Museum Education, History, Methodologies, specialist publishing and workshop experiences, which also took in consideration the non-verbal language of the body, the graphic communication and the artistic practice.

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt

Houghton Mifflin Company acquired Reed Education making the combined company the largest K-12 publisher in the world. It happened in December 2007. It brought together two trade publishing traditions which now make up the Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Trade and Reference Publishing Group.
Houghton Mifflin Company traces its history to 1832, when William Ticknor purchased The Old Corner Bookstore in Boston and, together with his partner, James Fields, established a publishing company. By the mid-nineteenth century, Ticknor and Fields had assembled a list of authors that included some of the most renowned names in American literature: Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Mark Twain, and Henry David Thoreau.
Ticknor and Fields formed a close association with The Riverside Press, a Boston printing company founded by Henry Houghton in 1852. George Mifflin became employed there as an eager young Harvard graduate. After working in nearly every position at the press, he became Houghton's partner in 1872.
In 1880, Ticknor and Fields merged with The Riverside Press to form Houghton, Mifflin and Company. In addition to publishing the esteemed Ticknor and Fields trade authors, the new company established an educational department in 1882.
Over the years, Houghton Mifflin launched many notable careers, including those of Willa Cather, Carson McCullers, Philip Roth, Paul Theroux, Robert Stone, Jhumpa Lahiri, and Jonathan Safran Foer. The company also numbers Tim O'Brien, Edna O'Brien, Cynthia Ozick, and Ward Just among its fine authors of fiction. Houghton Mifflin's nonfiction list features seminal works by Winston Churchill, Arthur Schlesinger Jr., John Kenneth Galbraith, Rachel Carson, Jane Goodall, Eric Schlosser, James Carroll, and Richard Dawkins. The house is also known for its poets, among them the former poet laureate Donald Hall, Galway Kinnell, Grace Schulman, Alan Shapiro, and the winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 2007, Natasha Trethewey.
Recent highlights include Jerome Groopman's How Doctors Think, David Sheff's Beautiful Boy, Jonah Lehrer's Proust Was a Neuroscientist, Jonathan Miles's Dear American Airlines, Paul Theroux's Ghost Train to the Eastern Star, Philip Roth's Indignation, and Timothy Egan's The Worst Hard Time, which won the National Book Award. Houghton publishes the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, The Best American Series®, The Peterson Field Guides®, the Gourmet Cookbook and other culinary classics, and acclaimed books in the fields of science, sports, history, and current affairs.
Harcourt Trade Publishers was established when Alfred Harcourt and Donald Brace left Henry Holt and Company in 1919 to form a new publishing enterprise. Early Harcourt lists featured Sinclair Lewis, Carl Sandburg, and John Maynard Keynes, joined over the decades by Virginia Woolf, George Orwell, C. S. Lewis, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, Thomas Merton, Robert Lowell, T. S. Eliot, and Robert Penn Warren. The 1st edition of this book was written in the early 80s. An enormous change has occurred since that time. The explosive growth and the ability of computer power gave to undergraduate students the ability to carry out molecular calculations routinely that were unimaginable twenty years ago. This new edition incorporate this ability by discussing and encouraging the use of quantum chemistry programs such as WebMO and Gaussian, which most chemistry departments have access to. There are MathChapters on complex numbers, probability and statistics, vectors, series and limits, spherical coordinates, determinants, and matrices. The author has used matrix notation in a number of places, particularly toward the end of the book. Donald A. McQuarrie has provided about 50 problems at the end of each chapter (there are over 600 problems in this book). These problems range from filling in gaps to extending the material presented in the chapter, but most illustrate applications of the material. Also, he has provided answers to many of them at the back of the book.
