Test Sells In New York

Impressionism and post-impressionism did disappoint last November, particularly at Sotheby’s, when a Van Gogh was bought in whereas it had been expected to achieve more than USD 28 million and on which the auction house had agreed a guaranteed price. This mistake was sanctioned as of the following day, with a collapse in the Sotheby's share price. One week later, the success of the contemporary art sales again underpinned collector confidence in proving that the market had remained strong.For its Impressionist and Modern Art sale, Sotheby’s, whose stock price is trading at below USD 30 on Wall Street compared with above USD 57 in October 2007, is focusing more on modern art. Top of the bill: a spectacular canvas by Fernand Léger estimated at USD 35-45 million and an Edward Munch valued at USD 24-28 million. These two works again have minimum price guarantees as does the Christie's headline lot, a Monet painting entitled Le Pont du chemin de fer à Argenteuil which is expected to raise close to USD 35 million. Even if these works have not come up for auction for decades, competition is pushing the two auction houses to again take significant risks.The market will have to rise to another challenge: absorb no fewer than 11 major works by Alberto Giacometti in a matter of hours. The two rival sale rooms have each succeeded in bringing together major works by the Swiss sculptor, including La Place II and Grande femme debout II at Christie’s as well as Femme de Venise VII, a Buste de Diego and a canvas entitled Portrait de Caroline at Sotheby’s. True the artist did set a new record in May 2007 with L'homme qui chavire, a 1947 sculpture which sold for USD 16.5 million, compared with an estimated USD 6.5-8.5 million. True his price level again increased by +12% in 2007. True he has just been the subject of a major retrospective at the Pompidou centre in Paris. But is it possible, in the current environment, to sell works by Alberto Giacometti worth more than USD 70 million in just two days?Having learned from the November sales, the two auction houses continue to bet on contemporary art, a real market driver. If demand is strong, in one week this sector could bring in close to USD 1 billion at the two auction houses, a new record sales volume and significantly more than the Impressionist and Modern Art sales. No fewer than 14 lots have estimates of USD 10 million and above. The exceptional estimate of USD 70 million for the headline lot, a 1976 triptych by Francis Bacon, would appear to ignore commentators who fear that the US economic recession is likely to affect the most speculative and volatile sector of the art market…

Contemporary Indian Art – An Explosive Market

In the mid 1990s, strong economic growth in India flushed out a new generation of collectorslooking toinvest in the art of fellow Indians. Today, demand is global and rising, fuelled by a very speculative environment with tempting opportunities for quick in and out trading. The new stars of Indian art are sought after in Hong-Kong and Dubai, London and New York, New Delhi and Paris.
Galvanised by specialist auctions, contemporary Indian art has made spectacular gains: in January 2008, the sector’s price index was up by 830% over the decade!
Flagship auctions of Indian art never fail to feature established names like Francis Newton Souza, Tyeb Mehta and Sayed Haider Raza. All born in the 1920s, they traced a path to contemporary art with erudite but uninhibited work that was stamped with Indian culture while owing much to Western art. The international success of this artistic generation opened a breach. And the young Indian scene, artists born between the 1950s and 1970s, swept through it. At the top of the list, apart from media stars like Anish Kapoor and Sudodh Gupta, there are Atul Dodiya, Ravinder REDDY, Chintan UPADHYAY, Shibu Natesan or Santosh TV… all have made over six figure sums at auction. Anish Kapoor, born in 1954, is a perfect illustration of soaring prices for contemporary Indian art. Consider, for example, his sculptureMother as a ship: a motherly form of more than 2 metres, draped in a blue pigment that calls up infinite stretches of sea and sky. It is a work of meditation that typifies Kapoor’s work. It was put up for auction three times between 1998 et 2007, first at Christie’s London where it fetched GBP42,000, or USD 72,000. In May 2007, also at Christie’s, it went for USD 650,000 in New York. Kapoor was introduced to the secondary market twenty years ago and enjoys an international audience. He is unquestionably the most expensive contemporary Indian artist today. His rise accelerated in November 2006 when Sotheby’s auctioned the Vanthournout collection. The alabaster sculpture on sale went under the hammer at USD 2m, five times its estimate. Since then, Kapoor has made 5 other sales over the million dollar mark with the maximum, USD 2.5m, for another alabaster sculpture (14 November 2007, Sotheby’s NY). Nevertheless, not all his works are prohibitively expensive: small sculptures produced in limited series, go for between EUR 3,000 and 10,000. In the last two years, speculative overbidding for a few elected contemporary artists has been confirmed. In 2005 for example, Atul Dodiya broke through the USD 100,000 level for the first time (The Mocking, Sotheby’s NY, 20 September 2005). Two years later, his paintingLodging in Somnath, bought for the equivalent of USD 5,000 in 1995 (GBP 3,200, Christie’s London) was sold for HKD 3m, i.e. more than USD 385,800! Unlike Atul Dodiya, Sudodh Gupta, 44, was unknown in international auction houses three years before. Today, he is so famous that he is considered as the Indian Damien Hirst! In 2005, Sotheby’s sold his paintingFishermanfor USD 13,000. By 2007, his paintings had easily risen ten times in price and were selling for between EUR 130,000 and 280,000 on average. He is enjoying global success and is sought after in Hong Kong, London or New York, and also in France. In fact, his new record was made in Paris, at Artcurial on 3 April 2008, forVehicle for the seven Seas… The installation, which transforms a trolley and suitcases into precious objects, was sold for EUR 425,000, more than three times its estimate.

Having usurped France’s third place in global art market figures for 2007 (behind the US and the UK) China is consolidating its global presence by hosting art fairs with a genuinely international reach.
Already in September 2007, a Shanghai fair entitled Sh contemporary brought together a hundred or so national and international galleries. Six months later (i.e. 24 - 28 April 2008) Peking is hosting the fifth edition of the CIGE (China International Gallery Exhibition). European and American galleries will be there with artists from all over the world - within a broad focus on the Asian art scene. As well as a large selection of Chinese galleries, the CIGE is also expecting galleries from Korea, Indonesia and Japan. The event will exhibit works by artists who are still relative auction novices and by Chinese artists who have already gained recognition in Asia, Europe, the UK and the United States.
Indeed, the auction sales figures attained by the stars of the Chinese contemporary art scene are becoming more and more spectacular in Asia with some sales breaking records set in Anglo-American markets. For example, on 9 April 2008, during the Sotheby’s sale of the Estella Collection in Hong Kong, a work by Xiaogang ZHANG - who will be 50 this year - entitled Bloodline: The Big Family No.3 doubled its estimated value when it fetched HKD 42.255 million (c. USD 5.4m). This spectacular sum set a new record for the artist. In 2007, both Christie’s and Sotheby’s in London and in New York had offered similar quality works from the same Bloodline series, but none had generated beyond 3.5 million US dollars… so Zhang Xiaogang’s ascension is continuing!
With 90% of Estella collection sold in Hong-Kong, the auction was a real success and has beaten the modest records for Chinese contemporary art last month in New York...

Smithsonianofficial resigned in the wake of ethics probe.The head of the Smithsonian Latino Center resigned in February after an internal investigation found that she violated a variety of rules and ethics policies by abusing her expense account, reports theWashington Post. Pilar O'Leary, who was hired in 2005 by then secretary Lawrence M. Small to be the institution's key representative on Latino affairs, tried to steer a contract to a friend and solicited free tickets for fashion shows, concerts, and music award ceremonies, according to records released yesterday by the Smithsonian. In the report, Smithsonian inspector general A. Sprightley Ryan said O'Leary violated fourteen ethical and conflict-of-interest policies. Many details were unclear because long passages were blacked out by Ryan for privacy reasons. "The investigation revealed that O'Leary has not always acted in the best interests of the Smithsonian," the report concluded. "Her conduct has violated the basic ethical rules of the Institution." O'Leary, thirty-nine, denied any wrongdoing, saying in an e-mail to thePostthat the tickets were "not gifts" and that her travel had been approved by her supervisors in the office of then deputy secretary Sheila Burke. In an interview with investigators made public with the report, O'Leary said she had never been questioned by superiors regarding her travel expenditures.

Gallery located at 525 West 26 Street in Chelsea. Name of this exhibition is 'New Ukrainian Painting.' During an exhibition Opening-Reception guests were drinking Dutch beer and discussed art works, New York and life in general. Art dealer from another gallery said "I couldn't look at this big, made like out of steel CONDOM. It has human body size and red-orange color..." Her friend pointed another painting signed by Katia Solovieva. He said "I like this painting. It is 'a social realism...'."
Someone noticed two big canvases with portraits of male and female with gorillas' faces, blue man's shorts...
It was crowd, with fluid of uniqueness in the air. Unfortunately artists never came. Audience were expecting Ukrainians. But Gallery receptionist said that paintings shipped, and artists didn't come because Ukraine is so far away.
Any way, Ukrainian painters expressed a sense of liberation. As the former institutions that once defined their identity have been challenged, they now explore what is it to be Ukrainian in the 21 century.

Federico Solmi was born in Italy. He is a self-thought artist. Now Federico based in New York. He demostrates his independent vision showing his video-animation and drawings at the Elga Wimmer PCC and LMAKprojects at 526 West 26 Street in Chelsea. This exhibit received generous support of Italian Cultural Institute in New York and will travel to ADN Galeria in Barcelona, Spain and Galerie Pascal Vanhoecke in Paris, France.

Live Out Loud

Increasingly more & more respected & unbiased studies emphasize the disturbingly high rates of suicide, smoking, drinking, drug & other destructive behaviors as well as dropping out of high school for lesbian, gay, bisexual, & transgender teenagers in America. at his fact, in conjunction with the story "The Gun in the Closet," published in 2000 by Metrosource Magazine, inspired Live Out Loud founder Leo Preziosi, Jr., to do something in 2001. The Metrosource article told the true story of two gay teens who commited suicide, Preziosi envisioned a world where LGBT youth can, "Live Out, Live Proud, Live Free", thus, he created Live Out Loud to help make this vision reality.
Live out LOud connects LGBT youth to out, professional role models who provide positive examples, share information and experience about successful LGBT persons, and what pathway helped to live an enriched and productive life. Its mission: "To empower, energize and enable Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Youth to live the live of their dreams through the celebration of the richness and diversity of our shared experience, the visibility of role models and the dissemination of information."
Since 2001, Live Out Loud programs, all free of charge, have reached more than 5,000 New York City students through panel discussions, speakers bureaus & excelling in their lives & careers, & want to volunteer to share their stories with LDBT youth. Programs usually are held in the afternoon when the school day has concluded or as part of an after-school program. This programs are held at area high schools, youth centers, universities with sponsorship of campus clubs, organizations &/or departmental forums...
